If anyone is interested in a good used close ratio Series III
transmission, I have one I'd like to get out of my garage. $100 plus
shipping.

In addition to the advantage of not finding/grinding shift into first
gear,
the true advantage of the full synch is that the gear ratios tend to be
a
bit more usable. On the Series 1,2 and early 4 trans, the first gear is
suitable for pulling tree stumps, though other Rootes cars were geared a
hell of a lot lower. Then second gear is so close to first. The great
leap
is between second and third. This jump is totally unsuitable for any
performance application and better suited to an estate wagon. On the
series
3, Rootes used a close ratio transmission, closer in ratio than the full
synch, but they only did this for one year. This transmission is sports
car
throughout. The series 5 is wider but still smoother driving than the
early
cars. It is not geared as low in first as the early trans so might not
help
when removing that stubborn tree stump from the back yard. Hope that
helps.
