Eric,
     Chances are, the reason that the new pilot bearing wouldn't fit was
because you never removed the old one? There are two different types, one
being the old broze one that was soaked overnight in oil, while the second
is a roller bearing. Perhaps you didn't remove the outer shell? You really
do need a pilot bearing. This is the input shaft bearing that goes in the
rear of the crankshaft. Without it, you could get some tremendous vibrations
coming out of the input shaft area, with resulting failure of the bearing
that supports the input shaft in the transmission. Lou
