MJ,
Changing polarity does not affect the starter motor. It does, however affect
the generator, provided you have the original dynamo, and have not upgraded to
an alternator, you can switch.
You should check your radio, and also if you have a clock, as they are
polarity sensitive. I'm assuming you do not have electronic ignition, as I
don't
think you can find this for a positive earth.
Lastly, I assume you have the original tachometer, which is mechanical, and
driven off the distributor body adapter. Electronic tachometers are polarity
sensitive (which may be why you're taking this route).
Once you've checked the above, it gets easy.
1. Remove the field connector from the dynamo
2. Switch the battery connectors over to give neg ground.
3. 'Flash' the field connector (that's the smaller of the two) to the +
terminal of the battery a couple of times for +/- 2 seconds per go. To do this,
just connect any old piece of wire to the field connector, and just touch to
the
+ terminal a couple of times. This changes the polarity of the dynamo, causing
it to charge in the right direction.
4. Reconnect the field connector.
5. Start the engine.
You're ready to go.
