It's already been done, and so far, so good. A few national trophies
have gone to the 1.6, but the MR2 and 924S are still holding their own
against the 1.6 Miata. There are certainly courses in which each car has
its strengths (the launch at Pros favors the MR2; horsepower courses do
not, for instance). The Miata is smaller, lighter, and nimbler but you
gotta love the MR2's torque.
