I know of two cases of cars that where on jack stands here in the Santa
Clara Valley during the Loma Prieta Quake, one fell off, one didn't. My
recollection of the Sylmar Quake (I was living in the San Fernando
Valley at the time) was that the amount of damage had a lot to due with
orientation. e.g., cinder-block walls facing one direction got knock
over but ones nearby facing 90 degees away stood undamaged.

With so many faults criss-crossing California it's damn hard to
predict which direction the next quake will come from.
