Ball joint removal

I've started to redo the front suspension on my Spit. last night and are 
now trying to remove the ball joints.  The problem is I don't have a ball joint 
remover.  Can I just use a hammer to tap the old ones out or can I use
a pully extractor on it?  

On another note, does anyone have an explaination why is that when I'm
working on my car everything that I need are alway just out of reach:).
