Yes the plate is supposed to be flat. While there isn't oil forced forward
of the block, you'll see the front plate has a full size gasket between it
and the block.
Try to make it flat, I had a few at home, but I had to clean out my parts
warehouse in my gracious parents' garage before I left for school.
