I received a question from someone on the Volvo-net about a
Smith's tachometer. I though I'd ask the britcar list since most
of us use Smith's instruments to monitor the wellbeing of our
pride and joy.

This fellow just purchased a Smith's tach (vintage, early '70's)
from his local vintage V*lv* parts guy. Of course as it goes,
there is no wiring description for how to set this little bugger
up.
The tach has 5 wires coming off of it, three white wires, and two
blacks. The two long white wires are encased in a heatshield/
wiring harness-type plastic sleeve. He has been told that these
run from the negative terminal of the coil, and then to the
condenser/points stud on the distributor. The one longer black
wire has a loop-type connector on it and is suspected to be the
ground for the tach.
The two short wires, one black, one white, were traced to the
light inside the tach.

He hooked up the two long white wires and the longer black wire
and nothing happened. He was told that there needs to be a red
power wire for the tach, but he doesn't have one, where should it
get connected?
Also, he suspects that the light is burned out on the tach, how
easily attainable and fixable it this light?

I looked at my MGB wiring diagrams but couldn't find anything
helpful. Any Smith's specialists out there?
