Eric,

Sounds like your button is for glow plugs for a diesel.  Maybe that fan
noise is really a diesel rattling, and you have the world's only known
diesel roadster. My SERIOUS guess is that it may go to the ceramic resistor
up next to the coil, bypassing the piece in the ignition/starter switch that
is supposed to switch between "start" and "run" voltage. If you can trace
the wire to it's destination, then you'll know what it's bypassing, and what
to replace. Probably the ignition/starter switch.

Don't mess around with seatbelts.  If you want "original", buy new belt
assemblies  from one of the suppliers on the list. Spread the load on seat
and seatbelt mounting points with backup plates or large body washers. The
best choice is to buy aftermarket competition belts.  The archives have lots
of information on this.
