Don't know about other trades but in the toolmaking busines where there is a
need for some very fine grits "emery" always denoted the coarser grades down
to 800 and crocus cloth was much finer. I would consider using the 1500 or
2000 grit wet or dry used for wet sanding and using light oil to soften the
cut even more if necessary.
