Thanks for all of your advice. I believe that I did experience a massive
short. I have yet to find out where, but there are a few places where it could
have happened. A lot of you have suggested that the ammeter is a bit too
rare/expensive/annoying of a fuse for this type of problem. My fear is that if
I don't have this thing fixed, it can/would/will happen again. The last thing
I need to do is go through a couple of these 35 year old gauges. For those of
you in the know, could you please give me exact directions on how to put a real
fuse in there. Which wires, size, etc.
