The exhaust is pretty cool by the time it reaches the resonator and with all
the air surrounding the area I don't think there's any reason for concern
unless the resonator rubs through the gas tank.

Heated gas? Cars run better with cool gas/air as the charge is denser.
That's why they make cooler cans using ice and also to prevent detonation.
