Mike,
The cotter pin holds a shim (1mm or 2mm), spring and regulator valve
(in that order) into the upper body of the pump.
To give a thorough clean I would dissemble this part.
There is only a gasket between the oil pump body and the engine block.
When you remount the pump, just pour clean engine oil into it from the
top until it appears to be either full or oil comes out the bottom. It
should prime PDQ once you crank the engine.

I pulled my oil pump tonight, took it apart, and cleaned it up. what
should I
look for as far as wear and tear is concerned? the gears look good and
my
screen is intact. there is a cotter pin holding what appears to be a
bronze
bushing in the body of the pump. should I pull this out? what is it
for? there
was a gasket between the oil pump and the block. is there supposed to
be one
between the oil pump body and the part that the screen bolts too? I
was
planning on rotating the pump until it seated during its
reinstallation. Can I
pull the dizzy, mark its location, and then use a screw driver to turn
the
pump by way of the gear in the dizzy mount to get oil into it? I hope
this
made sense!

thx,

mike
