IMHO,
I would use DEVES Rings in you 0.040 block if there is less than 0.006 taper
its not the piston to wall clearance, but the taper that causes the rings not
to seat.
What is the taper on your 0.040 block with 0.004 piston clearance?
Also the piston groove to ring clearance is more important.
