I guess the Mars program is dependent on a base being built on the moon
first and then being able to send supplies to the moon to build the Mars
craft. That does sound like a lot of work especially to build the Mars craft
on the moon.

Besides money you'd need a lot of launches to the moon for materials, first
to build the moon station, and then the mars vehicle. Seems like an awfully
long time would be required as well as money. a new engine and airframe will
need to be designed to do the launches from earth as the current method
leaves a lot to be desired.

PS - I agree with you about the technology being a very valuable byproduct
of the space program. I worked with a company that used technology developed
for the space program that was used to check for breast cancer as well as
other illnesses.

Does NASA license their patents?
