Steering Shaft Removal

Whats the easiest way to remove the steering shaft on a 68 2000.  Getting
ready to pull the body off the frame, and wasn't sure, #1 how to take the
horn button off without damaging it, #2, do I have to pull the entire
steering assembly or will just the rod slide out through the passenger
compartment after the steering wheel is removed, or if so is that method not
recommended?
