I had a case of backfiring caused by a bad spark plug. The  carbs had been 
put together by a young kid and had got the pistons mixed up and they would 
not lift once the engine fired. The piston vacuum hold was in the wrong 
place and if you started the engine without lifting the piston by hand it 
would not run. I changed the pistons and the car would run but had a bad 
case of backfiring. I found #2 spark plug dead.  Replaced it and the engine 
runs nice and could adjust the carbs.
