The resistor is actually there to protect the coil.
The original equipment type of coil is designed to operate at <12V typically
8V.
At cranking, the ignition switch contacts short out the resistor, connecting
the full 12V to the coil.
This is to make starting easier.
Then when the engine fires and the key is returned to ON, the resistor is
switched back into the coil circuit and the system runs on 8V.

To protect the points, a capacitor/condenser is connected across them.
This provides a spark quench path to earth when the points open in an
inductive circuit.

The condenser can certainly be disposed of once you fit an electronic
system.
By the same token, the coil will need to be replaced with one which is
designed for 12V operation WITH an electronic ignition.
