I have an early box. 

All I did was loosen the lock nut, turn the shaft with a screwdriver 
until I felt a little resistance, then locked the locknut back down.

All of the play is gone, and I don't have any problems with "tight 
spots" or anything else.  It works fine, and the steering is tight...  :-)
