I was just trying to get my new crank installed in my 1500 after my very new
thrust washers were expelled at an inopportune moment and ran into some
troubles. I can't figure out the timing marks on the cam and crank gears.
I was able to match the timing mark on the cam to the cam gear, but there is
probable five degrees of slop in the fit.
When I try to match up the timing marks on the two gears with the chain on,
I can't get the two marks to properly align. Using a straight-edge, I
always end up off about a half of a tooth.

So the concerns:
1. Are the timing marks on the gears meant to fall on the tooth or the
space between the tooth?
2. What is to be done about the slop between the cam and cam gear? Is this
intended to be an improvised adjustment, and if so, how should I lock it in?

Any experience with these concerns would be greatly appreciated so I can
finish getting this ready for the next autox.

thanks,
jim
