BIll,
I sympathize with you.  I have pulled the gearbox now five times and still have 
not fixed my problems.  I will have at least one more
go at it using the shorter release bearing collar to locate the bearing further 
back.  THis way, I can use the shims I made up to
provide more space between the pressure plate and flywheel surface.  I feel 
that this must be the key to making the combination work. 
(At least I hope so, I'm losing what little hair I have left!)
