Matthew,

There are a lot of conflicting publications out there. The A and J types has
been used in many marques, including Volvo and A-H and both gear lube and
motor oil have been specified at various times. The use of motor oil in a
tranny initially bothered me, because I envisioned the oil being broken down
by the cutting action of the gears, but Saab recommends motor oil in the
gearbox of my 1988, 9000S and they do not even provide a drain plug, it's
lubed for life. (Not in my car! It's been changed and is ready again)

I've used Valvoline 20-50 Racing motor oil in my street/AutoX TR3 OD box for a
few years and have been happy with it's performance. It was suggested by
fellow FOT'er Ken Gillanders, who indicated some trouble with synthetic gear
lubes being too slick and forcing the syncro's to work too hard and fail
early. I don't recall all the details, but the Valvoline 20-50 Racing motor
oil provides good shifting for me, hot or cold. I do, however run synthetic
lubes in everything else I own, so find me one that works and I'll use it.
