AFAIK, Laycock (the OD mfgr) has always recommended motor oil, and in
fact the A-type service manual has a specific warning against using
"extreme pressure gear" oils.

Triumph originally said motor oil, but switched their recommendation
sometime in the early 60's.  According to Ken G. this was in response to
some early gearbox failures.  I've been following Ken's recommendation
of Valvoline 20W50 Racing oil for several years, I'm quite happy with
the results.
