Reminds me of the Trip to Portland for VTR 2000.  I traveled all the way from 
Tucson to Barstow, CA after meeting up with Michael Porter, before
realizing that I had not tightened the hitch onto the ball.  After that trip I 
converted it to a Clamp down type hitch so I could see immediately
whether it was locked.

Thankfully, I had sufficient tongue weight and didn't hit any hard bumps along 
the way.
