Hey all,

Our resident cryo facility (okay, a mile down the road) always heat tempers
the cryo-treated piece afterward, and recommends that machining be done
AFTER the treatment.  I would recommend cryo strongly over nitriding --
nitriding apparently makes the surface of the metal harder, while cryo
strengthens the metal by strengthening the bonds at the molecular level,
through the entire piece.  Larry -- you can check the archives for the
piece I wrote the list a couple/few months back about cryo treatment, or I
will be happy to send it to you when I get home to that computer.

Have you ever heard of cryogenically treating metal?  It use the reverse
process(kinda) or nitrating, cooling instead of heating.  You don't have to
do anything to the part to retrue it after treatment.  I have a cryo treated
crank in my TR6 for about 17 race weekends or the equivalent of about 2000
race miles.
