You can spread the case by putting it in a press and gently compressing it
vertically (think of it line squeezing a plastic cup--the sides you are not
squeezing flare out). I find it much easier than using the spreader tool (I
made one).

I'm getting ready to receive a Southwick Conversion axle in the next couple
of weeks.  In doing so, I'm tearing down my current axle to use the carrier,
(welded diff).  Other than the "Special" tool required to "spread" the diff
housing as shown in the Haynes manual, is there a way to remove the carrier?
I've removed the two bearing caps already.
