<<But why bother?>> 'Cuz I need to do it short term while acquiring a
proper axle :-)

I've got some alternative trailing arms I hope to use to get the toe
right - no real way to know until the axles are in the car.

Thanks, Clark.

I've done it for short term while acquiring a proper axle.
The toe-in will be wrong unless you do something to compensate.
Otherwise ok.
But why bother?

Would the shorter (narrower track) swing axles from an earlier car work
on a later Spitfire if I swapped the spring along with the axles?

The narrower track would not be ideal, I'm sure, but would it get us
some laps?

==AM==
I don't think you'd need to switch springs, but there are differences in
radius rods and/or mounts to the body (not sure which) and in brake
hydraulic hoses. Also, if the car with the shorter "donor" axles is old
enough, it might have the smaller flanges to the differential?

Otherwise, it's only a 2" total difference in track width. Maybe that's
a lot, but possibly a bit of creativity with wheels and/or wheel spacers
could compensate?

*Man: Well, no ... It's not so much of a jet, it's more your, er,
Triumph Herald engine with wings.
