After having similar experiences to Mike's a couple of years ago (and
replacing several oil coolers) I decided to add a second oil filter. I run
a remote Fram HP1 between the oil pump and cooler. I've added a -8 System 1
filter between the cooler and the engine. This is a filter that can be
disassembled, checked and cleaned. I initially checked it after every
session. Once I was assured nothing bad was going into the engine, I
reduced the frequency of inspection. Belt and suspenders, but engines are
darned expensive.

Has anybody ever put a remote oil filter between the engine and the input of
the oil cooler to prevent klag from getting into the cooler?

Compare the price of a new oil cooler with the price of a new
motor. I'd have to ask myself if I'm willing to take a chance to
save a hundred or two $.

Seems a shame to throw away a new cooler, but they are virtually
impossible to get completely clean, unfortunately.
