Greg, you did not mention what ratios you have. During my short racing
career I tried numerous gear combinations. 20% jumps seem to be about
right for the upper gears in our cars, which is what a standard A-type
overdrive gives (22% or 0.82). The standard gearbox ratios give about a
30% jump between 3rd and 4th, while the close ratio gears are closer to
20%, so standard gears give a 3rd overdrive which is 10% lower than 4th,
while with a close ratio box they are essentially the same. The
advantage of the overdrive is to give a useable gear between 2nd and
3rd. I don't see how you can improve on the combination of an OD and
close ratio box with a 4.55 rear. I found it useful to have two ways to
get the same gear because sometimes it is easier/quicker to shift the OD
rather than the transmission. Everyone say overdrives are temperamental
and add weight. I never found mine to be a problem and a small
improvement in gearing can easily make up for the extra weight.

The alternative OD ratios I've seen are larger than 20%. You'd have to
go to a very large OD ratio to get a useable 3rd-OD which is between 3rd
and 4th. Some of the alternate OD ratios are probably better for highway
cruising.
