BN1 (late) brakes

G'day list from sunny Queensland!

Just been checking out a minor oil leak from a rear hub. Whilst doing this I
cleaned up the backplate etc (shoes off) When reassembling, I found one of the
little felt bushes that go on the shoe steady posts missing, and the other
pretty chewed up. What, if any, purpose do these serve (I can't see one as
they don't seem solid enough to keep the shoe off the end of the post) - and
is there an alternative?
