Most starters have the pinion gear at the end of the starter shaft,
and engage inwards, hence the bevel facing the motor body. Most
starters do this because it keeps the starter motor from striking the
gear ring off the flywheel. Obviously the Healey starter is oriented
the other way, so the bevel end should be facing away from the starter
body... helps it engage the gear on the flywheel.
