Hi Gale,
I would hazard a guess that your idea that the hydraulic pressure is not
bleeding off is a likely cause of the problem.
This is easily checked by powering and releasing the overdrive solenoid
several times while the car is stationary, which will deplete any residual
hydraulic pressure in the system, and then attempting the back up procedure.

If the result is that the resistance to movement has gone then the most
likely cause is a blockage of the jet inside the operating valve.
This is accessed by removing the hex plug on the top of the OD unit as per
the WS manual.

As a new member to the List I would like to thank everyone in advance who
would care to comment on questions that I'm sure have been answered many
times. After driving my 67 BJ8 from Florida to San Diego in March (about
2700
miles) with no problems I am now experiencing a failure of the OD to drop
out
of OD. I've read the comments in the Archives and have checked electrical
operation which seems fine. The symptoms are like Neal G.
described....."feels like something is under the wheels" when carefully
starting to back up so I don't attempt to backup. Ocaisonally though
backing
results in a free wheeling action in the OD ie. a slight growling sound and
apparent failure to lock in either direct or overdrive resulting in no
movement of the car.
My question... can a tug of war between the hydraulic pressure and
spring
pressure result in the clutch hanging between either locked position. Is it
possible that the hydraulic pressure is not bleeding off as fast as it
should?
I have ND 30 wt oil in the transmission and OD.
Thanks again for any suggestions
