I think not. I believe that as the adjusting screws unscrewed, the push rods
had so much play that they would "snap" back into their sockets as the
lifters rose. Adjusting the valves properly and spinning the engine gave on
unusual sounds. Two rods had actually come out of the lifters. I checked all
push rods for straightness.

What was the cause of your "snapping" noise?  It would be good to know for
my future reference.  Was it a sticky lifter?
