Friends,
I'm desperately trying to get my BJ8 dashboard in and hooked up. The
heater and its controls are giving me a headache.
(1) The top right hand knob has a rather short and stiff Bowden cable
which I managed to attach to the inlet (butterfly type) valve in the
heater housing. The wording on the knob (which I believe to be
original) is worn off, can only read a P and thought the original
wording was PULL. Therefore in the 'pushed home' position the valve is
closed, and when I pull out the knob the valve opens. On pictures in
various books I tend to read that the text on the knob was PUSH which
leaves me puzzled. Is the original text PULL or PUSH?
(2) What puzzles me even more is the travel of the heater valve cable.
Sliding the control knob from full port to full starboard (yes, ex naval
officer)
makes the lever of the heater valve travel over only an estimated 60% of
its full travel. That's my 2nd puzzle, and the third is: in what
position is the heater valve closed - is the lever then fully up or
fully down? I want to ensure that in the 'Min' position of the lever the
valve is really closed - have read too many stories about cockpit heat.
(3) When I fill the cooling system, how do I bleed the heater?
And finally I want to make the statement that in my opinion the
designers of the Healey dashboard and all what is hidden behind it must
have had four arms with eight hands and ten fingers on every hand.
Look forward to your reactions as I have ceased all dashboard activities.
Regards, and have a nice weekend.
