I must have misspoken. The air deflectors in front of the radiator are exa=
ctly as they should be and have been thus installed for the last 30 years a=
t least. I drove 80 miles yesterday and the temp never got above 170 but th=
en, the weather has changed and it's much cooler than when the radiator ove=
rheated. I'm convinced that in some way, that cardboard piece I had placed =
in front of the radiator was complicit in causing the overheating even thou=
gh I had earlier driven 200 miles with it in place without it overheating..=

Your comments "high speed. run of twenty miles" and "extra series of coolin=
g tubes" may offer some clues. Fan blades flex away from the side that push=
es air, in other words towards=C2=A0the radiator. The extra cooling tubes m=
ay have reduced the clearance between the radiator and the fan. There isn't=
much clearance to begin with. The combination of the two may have been eno=
ugh for the fan to hit the radiator.
The other issue is what caused the overheating. At high speeds the fan has =
little to no effect on cooling. Unless the ambient temperature=C2=A0was ver=
y high and you were going up a steep hill the colling system should keep up=
. What was the water temperature gauge saying?
