I have to echo Wayne's sentiments with respect to the road conditions.
Typically it is hazardous to take the car out before the end of April.
Partly because of the likelihood of snow, but mostly because of sand on the
road. On this trip the weather was looking good. We hadn't had any snow
for more than a week and the impending Nor'Easter wasn't due for several
days - while I would be in Florida. Of course, mother nature decided I
needed some excitement and sent 1" of snow and with it two very large salt
trucks laying down a thick layer of car melt. When I stopped for gas three
hours later, I found 1/2" pieces of salt up by the pedalbox and a full
covering of salt on what had been a VERY fresh painting of the engine bay
and airdam. To add insult, on the return trip, another car kicked up a rock
and put a spot (pit/small crack) on the windshield right in my line of
sight. Oh! the travesty of it all.
I did however enjoy the warm weather coming at this time of year. I always
look forward to an overdose of car talk for three days. I also look forward
to hanging with you all.
Don, thank you for pulling the whole event together. Having not actually
attempted such a feat, I can only imagine the amount of time required.
Which brings me to a thought that perhaps we as a group need (a very small
amount) more organization. The looseness is nice, but that means it is
largely a solo affair to bring off the convention. Certainly there must be
tasks that can be delegated to other attendees, such as taking care of the
"registration", manning the hospitality room, coordinating any awards should
they be awarded. I'm simply suggesting that we might better serve ourselves
by being more involved on the front end. To that end, I hereby post myself
as being available to be called upon for some help by "The Organizers".
Coming from one end of the earth, and the 1000+ miles it takes to get
anywhere outside the northeast, I would say that driving is a primary part
of the event. And therefore, I find driving at the event is a major need.
Being the neophyte that I am to long distance travel to such meets (and
meets in general), I am truly astounded that people can run for a 1000 miles
in one stretch. I tip my hat to you Rick. Say, is a catheter involved?

The date is March 23. We here in the North are still skiing. The reason
we can even get to the ski areas is that the salt trucks are so diligent
and thorough in their work. Having a V8 convention before April 15th will
eliminate any of us who do not want to subject our hard project work to the
salty road conditions, not to mention the driving distance to any place
that is warm.
