Cavitation is just the vaporization of the liquid, near the impeller. 
 It is not actualy introducing a new gas.  As soon as it passes through 
the pump, it should return to a liquid.  Mass is conserved (unless you 
have a small nuclear reaction in the engine, in which case you should 
forget about the MG and go for the Nobel peace prize).  The other 
options you mention are valid.  That can be affected by the relative 
heights of the filler neck and the pump, although I can't remember right 
now which one is supposed to be higher.
