My car is presently in the shop for an engine rebuild. I'd like
suggestions for what to consider getting done now as part of the
rebuild. My goal is to keep as original equipment and stock as
possible, and focus on reliability. The engine and trans are not
original but are correct for a '69 MGB. I know the shop does quality
work at reasonable prices. The engine is at the machine shop today
getting degreased and taken apart. Machining and rebuilding start next
week. BTW, I have had the car for 1-1/2 years, and have receipts for
work done the past 12 years. The body, chassis, interior and hood are
all in good condition and the car has wire wheels. I clearly intend to
keep the car for at least a few more years. It is my daily driver.
Here is what I've decided so far:
1) Replace sidedraft Weber with downdraft Weber
2) Replace header with standard exhaust manifold and downpipe
3) Go with no-lead head
4) Get alternator and starter taken apart and rebuilt as needed
5) Radiator was inspected and does not need rodding out
6) Go with all new hoses and belts
7) Maybe spend $200 to have 4-speed trans opened for inspection (I
have had no problems to date)
8) New clutch, throwout bearing, etc.
9) Clutch slave cylinder rebuilt (that is how this all started and how
I found out about the throwout bearing)
Thanks for any suggestions you may have. BTW, I will sell the used
sidedraft Weber with intake manifold and air cleaner for $250, and ship
it for free within the US.
