you could try checking the torque settings of the half shaft nuts. the
figure is very high, something like 135 ft/lbs and can normally only be
obtained by using a 3/4 inch drive.also are they wire wheels?. if so there
could be wear on the splines.

Also - check the bolts securing the rear shocks to the fender wells.  They
need to be very tight.  As do the u-bolts holding the rear axle to the leaf
springs (tho if they're loose, you'll probably experience torque steering).
First off, make sure all the knock-offs are really *tight*.  Of course the
"ping" could be those pesky differential spider gear thrust washers.  My
'76B *clunks* - I have not done this project before but I'm anticipating it
this summer.
