Hello folks,

I had a problem over the weekend with my MG Midget (1974, 1275cc, RWA)
and as I have just subscribed to this list I thought it would be worth
posting the problem to gauge the response. I have not investigated
thoroughly yet so the answer may be obvious, but here goes:-

Last weekend I broke down as the fuel pump packed up. When I got home
I stripped down the pump and found that, of the dual contacts, only one
had ever been used, the upper contact of the second was not attached
to the metal strip! How it ever worked I don'y knoe because it looked
like it was constantly in contact. The first set of contacts were well
pitted. The explains why the fuel pump packed up after only about two
years service but this is not my problem.

I sourced a new set of contacts from a local SU specialist, fitted those
and put it all back together and back on the car. However, when I
switched the ignition on there was no activity, no tapping noise. I
tested the electrical connections and there was juice going in and,
although it looked dodgy, earth was made and there was a voltage drop
across the pump. But it didn't pump.

I will begin further investigations tonight when I have taken the pump
off of the car again and got another arm soaked in petrol. I suspect that
perhaps when I put the contacts in I got the internal electrical
connections wrong - but only because I cannot think of anything else, not
because I am usually that stupid!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially a simple wiring diagram
for the internals of the pump - and please keep it simple as my electrical
knowledge is not wonderful.

By the way, the name of the SU specialists is;

Brin Services
St. Albans
Hertfordshire
England

01727 856989

I haven't visited them yet, but from the couple of telephone conversation
I have had they seem very knowledgable with an excellent stock of SU parts.

Cheers
Neil
