Well the very first thing that I ever had to replace on my 77B was
the alternator. I was young (17) and had little knowledge of cars at
the time and the mechanic at the garage I took the car to suggested
that I install a Delco alternator from a Cadillac instead of the
original Lucas. I didn't have much money at the time and the price
difference made the Delco tempting ($35 vs. $100) but I was/am a
stickler for originality so I dug deep. I can't remember the year for
the Cadillac but I think it was probably late 70s (77-80). Just a guess
mind you. And since we all know that GM uses the same damn components
in all of their cars, this should make the search easier. The
installation of the Delco required no modifications (or so I was told)
just a simple swap. BTW, I've had the Lucas alternator for 8 years and
never had any problems. If you decide to go the Delco route let me know
which one it is in case I ever decide to do the same. Best of luck.
