By rod bearings, do you mean big ends ?

As a general question, how can one tell where the rumbling / knock on
startup comes from. Is it big ends / main bearings / somewhere else. How does
one know whether to put new big ends in or to pull the engine and do the mains ?

Perhaps someone could give us a list of noise identification techniques ?
