Why don't you convert to negative ground.  Then you don't have to worry about
electrical confusion,  and you can install a modern radio (or other electronics)
if you want.  There is a well-known procedure that someone on the net will
remember.

Regarding the troubleshooting,  what specific problems do you have?  I have
completely re-wired 2 series I MGBs with no problems.  Most of the time,
problems are either corroded connections and occasionally,  burned wires (due to
who knows what).  If you have burned wires,  either replace the harness OR you
can splice in sections of wire (soldering splices and insulating properly,  of
course) and re-wrap the harness.

If you're having problems with the charging system,  and you just want to be
sure to cure the problem,  replace the generator and voltage regulator.  It's
not that expensive,  and you won't have to worry about it anymore.
