Yeah, if the float valve sticks open fuel overflows out that hole and can
splash on something hot. On MGAs these vents are metal tubes that
redirect overflow to the ground. If I were you I'd leave it like it's
supposed to be. If you can't live with this do the MGA type thing to
prevent danger of fire.
