  Thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions I managed to get the head off
the MGB's engine last night.  Boy was it stubborn though.  Twisting the
studs off with the dual nut trick didn't work, putting rope in the cylinders
and then turning the crank with a 3 foot long wrench didn't work, various
pulling, prying, wedging, begging and pleading didn't work either.  I still
think my dynamite in the cylinders + propane torch solution would have
worked though.  I figured that way I could probably get cam, crank, pistons,
you name it, all out at the same time.  "Jer's DIY guide to instant engine

  Anyway, the final solution?  I purchased a ratched stud extractor from
McMaster-Carr.  This pulled out all the studs except for the one problem
stud between plug holes #2 & #3.  With all the other studs removed, (and
after removing the water pump) I was able to twist the head off the block. 
Of course, that stupid stud stayed with the head, not the block, so I now
had the head free but the stud still in it.  Since it was no longer screwed
into anything though, I just banged it out with a drift.  So now tonight I
can continue with my tear-down and try to get the rest of the stuff off the
engine.
