After trying heaps of products on my TC, including Permatex ones, I ended
up ringing Loctite and they recommended the Permatex putty designed to work
with radiators and petrol tanks.  This has worked like a charm....although
I don't know if I'll ever get the sending unit off if I need to!!  I didn't
need to use a gasket at all for this
