Scott, SOMETHING is drawing way too much amperage through those points.
The coil is the only thing that I know of that will draw any amount of
current, other than the tach.  North American engines use a "honking big
coil" that uses a lot of power in the start position, then switch to an
external ballast resistor to limit the coil current.  The BMC system
has the coil designed to do the same thing internally.  The coil might
be faulty.  Check it by 1. substitution (with a known good coil, or 2.
measure the current draw with a good vom meter (I don't remember the
factory specs for the stock coil)
