My MGBGT came with a well constructed trailer hitch that attaches to 
 the bumper mounting bolts.  As I remember it, a previous owner used it 
  to tow a trailer from California to upstate  New York.  My son's 
 midget also has a hitch which he uses to tow a Laser class sailboat 
 which is considerably heavier than a canoe.
