To prime the oil pump and also preoil the engine a bit, I pumped a quart 
or so into the oil pressure gauge output on the side of the engine, then 
reattached the gauge line, added the rest of the oil through the oil 
filler, and cranked the engine with spark plugs out and ignition off to 
build pressure.  It should be enough to register on your oil gauge.  Then 
put in the plugs and fire it up.
