I don't know if this is the answer you're looking for, but on my '74 B I 
had to (like your husband) tear the hell out of the rear seal to get it 
out.  I ended up using a slide hammer with a nasty looking hook on the end 
of it and the seal was unrecognizable once it came out.  If it's any 
consolation, the new rubber seal is no problem to tap in.
